Description

The Grace O Malley story.A week of wellness in the west of Ireland.

The historical story behind Grace O’Malley is a powerful one.
Pirate Queen, a brave crusader and original feminist hero, Gráinne Ní Mháille (Grace O’Malley in Gaelic), sneered in the face of tradition and took to the seas where her fierce nature defied the unforgiving depths of the Atlantic.
We will follow Grace’s story around the west of Ireland, from Clew bay to Claire Island.

Our days will be framed with a yoga class followed by brunch.
Grace O'Malley leads the way, on our first day away.
A visit to Claire Island and Clew bay will start our week; Following the story of one of Ireland's fearless leaders.

"Who thinketh herself no small lady" - Sir Nicholas Malby on meeting Grace O'Malley.

The Sea Queen will be followed by Queen Maeve, the queen of Connacht.
On a clear day the burial karn of Queen Maeve is visible from the grounds of Temple house.
Queen Maeve’s trail is a sacred, magical place in County Sligo; A special place made sacred by our stone age ancestors and mythologized by their Iron age descendants - and by a modern poet.

The beauty and mythology associated with the Sligo landscape were the great inspiration for Nobel Prize winning poet W.B. Yeats. As a dominant regional landmark, Knocknarea is particularly prominent in his work, being featured in a total of seven poems.

“The wind has bundled up the clouds high over Knocknarea and thrown the
thunder on the stones for all that Maeve can say.” - W.B. Yeats

The Atlantic Ocean is the star of the week.
As our travels are along the Wild Atlantic way, we would be remiss not to spend some time at the beach.
A luxurious steaming bath of fresh seawater and wild organic seaweed will follow our ramble on Strandhill beach.

Seaweed baths have been a tradition in Ireland for hundreds of years and Ireland’s only indigenous spa therapy. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were an estimated 300 seaweed bathhouses in Ireland and nine in the small town of Strandhill. The last of the original Strandhill bath houses was destroyed in September 1961 by “Debbie” – the worst hurricane to hit the country. A population shift away from the Atlantic coast and the rise in popularity of un-organic treatments brought about a decline in the tradition.
Through VOYA, the Walton family has revived the Irish seaweed baths and their reopened baths in Strandhill are now one of only a few in the country.

Half a mile of avenue meandering through mature parkland brings you to Temple House, its lush green grass maintained in perfect order with the assistance of sixteen hundred sheep and their lambs. Fine old trees provide the flock with a measure of shade on hot days and, in all directions, there is a screen formed by the natural woods that cover more than half the area of this impressive estate.

Temple House, a luxury Country House in County Sligo, Ireland, is a classical Georgian manor set in a private estate of over 1,000 acres, overlooking a 13th- century lakeside castle of the Knights Templar. The Perceval family home since 1665, the present manor was redesigned in 1864 and enjoys the authentic and unpretentious luxury country house atmosphere.

Caroline Holmes

My story is not too different from many others.
Growing up in a volatile home in the center of Dublin.
A pub to be exact in Mary street.
My father had a bit of a mishap outside our pub.
A blow to the head left him with a brain injury that resulted in his death, fourteen days later.
It was the 1960s in Ireland where a woman knew her place. Well most of them did.
On the day of my father's death, the license for our pub died with him.
My mother needed to make a living and keep a roof over our heads.
Three of us...to be taken care of. My brother and the new man of the house was 5 years old.

Hiring a barrister to reinstate the license was the only way forward.
A lot of hoop-jumping brought this about. One-Year probation with the local Police station installed in my mother the believe in Woman are nothing without a man. Something she still carries to this day.
My mother was also remarried within that year.
No happy ending yet.Two more sons and a short marriage leave her a window again with 5 kids.
The happy parts only come when I am grown and living the life I thought I should have had from the beginning
Discovering in my late 40’s that anger is not the natural state of the body was a shock and left me groundless for a while. Canada and yoga brought me to a place I thought were only for nuns and monks.
Peace knocked a few times before I opened the door.
Yoga classes would be more than enough for the normal person.
I went on to become a teacher and studio owner. I am my Mother’s daughter.
That is the thing with the Peace business. You are obliged to share it.
A break from the intro music for Coronation street at my mother's house. Brought me to a walk on Black Water beach one Sunday morning.
Huge clarity and peace came back to take me down again. The feeling of peace in the heart and mind brought great energy to my life.
A dream to bring others to this space resulted in Yoga retreats Ireland.
“Sheer madness” as it has been described ‘who in their right mind would want to do yoga in Ireland? “
Apparently, people do.
From Aruba to North American and places in between people are coming. I do hope you will join me too.

An over view of Temple House.

Program

Daily yoga to start our morning.
Followed by brunch in the main dining room.
Afternoon visit on days away to see some of the most famous sites in Ireland.
Evening dinner.
