Discovering yoga in depth

The Tantric Alchemy Institute (TAI) provides a 300 hour Yoga Alliance certification upon completion of their classically scripted curriculum based around the ancient tantric paradigm once found in India.

TAI provides a compendium of tools as catalysts for human evolution by integrating wisdom found in the sciences of Samkhya philosophy; Hatha Yoga (asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, yantra, mantra), Ayurveda (the science of health), Vaastu (creating harmonious surroundings), and Jyotisha (classical techniques of divination). By incorporating these ancient sciences into one's contemporary life, vibrant physical health, equanimous mental and emotional states, the refinement and expansion of consciousness, spiritual growth, and real empowerment will harmoniously unfold. When this knowledge is applied with focused will, altruistic intention, and sincere discipline; exponential results will be acquired.

Yoga is one of the six classic darshanas of India. The word darshana means both “point of view” and literally “to see”. All of the darshanas share the purpose of supporting the human endeavour to achieve that progress which leads to liberation. All of the darshanas are woven from the same basic fabric to explain the nature of the Universe. Samkhya and Yoga, two of the six, are very closely woven together, and Samkhya also provides the foundation for understanding Ayurveda, Jyotisha, and Vaastu.

Study of Samkhya, Ayurveda, Sanskrit, Vaastu, Jyotisha, Dhuni Puja and Viraja Homa will together provide a strong foundation for teachers in comprehending the concepts of classic Yoga Shastra which are so deeply intertwined within these sister subjects and rituals. These subjects will be integrated into the science of Hatha Yoga which will be explored through asana practice and posture clinics, the art of sequencing and specialized teaching methods, yoga nidra, yoga therapy, the detailed study of pranayama techniques and benefits, meditation, bandhas, mudras, mantra and chanting, western anatomy and anatomy of the energy body. This YTT will give students the fundamentals of the vidyas which in India are traditionally considered basic essentials for a qualified teacher in any of the classic subjects.

This training is for those who have already completed a 200 hour level training or by permission from the Director of the program. This advanced 300 hour teacher training will enhance the scope of knowledge for even the most ardent practitioners.

The Sanctuary at Two Rivers in Costa Rica can accommodate up to 16 individuals. They offer two types of eco-chic accommodations which are jungle lofts and studio houses. Each type has its own unique qualities, size, bed options, and layout. All houses are set amongst picturesque tropical gardens with observation decks, hammocks, and wonderful jungle vistas.

They are powered by the high-tech solar power system, have green lighting, spectacular outdoor solar hot water showers with garden views, ceiling fans, and screened in walls, giving you an up-close and intimate experience with nature.

Zen jungle lofts
Tropical modern Zen jungle lofts are sensitively green-designed to harmonize within the natural environment, providing a comfortable up-close and very personal experience with nature, exclusively at The Sanctuary at Two Rivers in Costa Rica.

Each of the six jungle lofts places each guest at eye level with the forest canopy and the passing monkeys, singing tropical birds, and scented floral trees. Plenty of rooms to perch yourself on is a hammock at canopy eye level with your favorite book, a pair of binoculars, digital camera, and a glass of fresh mountain spring water. Screened-in open-faced walls allow for vintage viewing, excellent ventilation, pleasurable sun, and moonlight. Refreshingly cool slate stone supports the ambiance to relax, recharge, and reconnect.

Upstairs in the bedroom mezzanine, guest beds have an unencumbered view of the jungle. In the spacious bathroom and private dressing area, there is ample sink shelf space for each guest. Right outside, there is a tropical garden view solar hot water shower with great pressure and wide shower head.

All of these jungle lofts are of a townhouse design with two lofts side-by-side. Each accommodates two individuals with each guest in a single twin bed or combined to form a king bed. Each side of the duplex townhouse includes 17-foot open-faced screened walls, soaring ceilings, slate stone lounge space with two lounge chairs and coffee table, bedroom mezzanine with two twin beds, private dressing room with sink with hot water, private toilet room, garden-view solar hot water shower, hammock, and 625 square feet of living space.

Private studio houses
Perfect for couples or those who wish to have their own house, the two luxury-deluxe private studio houses provide spaciousness and Zen simplicity. These stand-alone eco-chic houses were designed to harmonize with the natural environment, providing a comfortable up-close and very personal experience with nature, exclusively at The Sanctuary at Two Rivers Yoga Retreat in Costa Rica.

One studio house is amidst the butterfly garden and the other studio house overlooks the cascading waterfalls. From each studio house's observation deck, each guest has plenty of room to perch on a chaise lounge or hammock with a favorite book, a pair of binoculars, digital camera, and a glass of fresh spring water. Screened-in open-faced walls allow for vintage viewing, excellent ventilation, and pleasurable sun and moonlight. Refreshingly cool slate stone supports the ambiance to relax, recharge, and reconnect.

In the spacious bathroom and private dressing area, there is ample sink shelf space for each guest. On the right outside is a tropical garden view solar hot water shower with great pressure and wide shower head. These two houses have a large king-sized bed, adjustable reading lights, security safe, ceiling fan, and ample shelf space.


This wildlife and yoga retreat sanctuary is perched approximately 1000 yards slightly above the Pacific Ocean in Cabuya at the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, which is one of only five Blue Zones in the entire world by having a large concentration of centenarians living in the area. The place is only two miles from Costa Rica's first national nature preserve, Reserva Cabo Blanco, and neighbors to the quaint artistic beach-town of Montezuma and the surf town of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.

The Sanctuary at Two Rivers gets her name from its land beginning at the junction of two rivers. In ancient India, this was called a Sangama. This point is revered as an auspicious place to build temples and ashrams because of the positive energy that literally flows over, around, and through this matrix of topography. Furthermore, set amongst hundreds of uninhabited tropical-dry forest acres, the private secluded property of 40 acres encloses manicured tropical gardens and Jurassic jungle, making it ideal for both inner and outer exploration. That’s nearly three acres of the Earth per guest to enjoy, enliven, and enlighten.

The guests will be introduced to the bountiful gifts of Mother Nature from the moment of their arrival as they walk from the car-park for 20 minutes over jungle and river paths to reach the grounds of the sanctuary. Nestled between two rivers with waterfalls that flow year-round, the private park is home to countless species of flora and fauna including exotic mammals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians that are common to Central America.

Liz Lindh

Liz Lindh is currently the director of The Sanctuary at Two Rivers, a unique boutique eco-conscious yoga retreat and teacher training wellness center and Nature preserve in Costa Rica. Here she created Lakshmi Rising School for Yoga and Wellness through which she offers Yoga Alliance approved Yoga Teacher Training certification programs and other wellness trainings throughout the year. She is also a faculty member of Tantric Alchemy Institute Divine Wisdom Advanced Yoga Teacher Training. At The Sanctuary and every where she goes, Liz offers lifestyle inspiration for health and awakening through yoga, movement, spirituality, meditation, self-care, ritual, exploration of the natural world, travel, adventure, environmental stewardship and creative self expression.

Dr. Lindh has has worked with many celebrities including award winning musicians, authors, actors, dancers, and artists of all sorts to inspire creativity, beauty and focus. She has worked with professional athletes in the field of sports medicine for enhanced performance, injury maintenance and prevention. Her extensive experience in Integrative Medicine includes research with stroke patients at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, a short tour with a rock band as their private acupuncturist and assistant chef, presentations at the University of Miami Miller College of Medicine, the development and implementation of a yoga, meditation and wellness program for cancer survivors for The Wellness Community, an international non-profit support group, the creation of 200 hour and 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training curriculum approved by the National Yoga Alliance, and the formulation of her own line of herbal elixirs and beauty products. Liz’s yoga sequences, retreats and wellness concepts have been featured by Yoga Journal, MindBodyGreen and The Chalkboard Mag. She has appeared on TV, radio and online as a yoga and wellness expert, recognized by MindBodyGreen as a leader in the field of wellness and received a Mercury Love Award as “Best Yoga Instructor″.

Liz has been exploring the path of yoga since the early 1990’s. Her dynamic vinyasa yoga classes are a fusion of fluid movement, flexibility, core strengthening and balance where you will find rhythm and awareness, breath and calm, ritual and rock & roll, integration of body, mind, heart and spirit. She teaches with the intention of spreading love, health and beauty. She continues to study yoga, movement, meditation and fitness across the globe with many great teachers.

She is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, a holistic skincare and natural beauty expert, Yoga Teacher and Yoga Teacher Trainer. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and a Masters of Oriental Medicine degree from the East West College of Natural Medicine as well as several other certifications across many disciplines.

Naga Nath

Naganath is the Founder of the Tantric Alchemy Institute. An ardent yogi for the past 22 years, Naga has completed over 1000 hours of yoga teacher training with Shiva Rea (her Advanced Teacher Training Program), Rod Stryker, and teachers from the Bihar School of Yoga. In 2004, Naga studied Ayurveda at The Ayurvedic Academy held at Bastyr University in Washington and began extensive studies in Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) with the aid of his close friend and mentor in various occult sciences, Dr. Robert Svoboda. It was Naga's devotion and earnestness that propelled and guided him to find a strong karmic resonance in Ancient Tantra, eventually being initiated by Shri Kapilnath into the International Nath Order, a modern Nath Tantric sect established by Shri Gurudev Mahendranath with its roots in the Adi-Nath Sampradaya and Uttara Kaula Sampradayas of which Shri Mahendranath was holder of parampara and Guru. The Guru tradition and initiation of the International Nath Order includes wisdom teachings from Hindu, Soto Zen and Taoist sources plus practices rediscovered by the science and yoga of meditation, contemplation, mantra and ritual. After managing a well-respected yoga studio in Venice Beach, California, Naga recognized a void in the western yoga scene and was compelled to create a yoga school which incorporates the classic yogic sciences under one umbrella in order to honor and keep the torch of the ancient yogis alight as well as to aid and advance western yoga students in these classic wisdom sciences.

Dhuni Ritual: Mantra and Pranayama Sadhana

Students will experience classical Yogic ritual to expand their consciousness and deepen their awareness using a specific series of mantras, pranayama and bandhas. This ritual enhances intuition, insight and imagination while incinerating karmas and samskara.

Learning Objective

An ancient Tantric ritual from the Nath lineage incorporating mantra, pranayama, meditation, Vedic astrology and cross-cultural symbolism.

Meditation Practice

Meditation practice will be seated or a walking meditation. We will practice japa, trataka and listening to Nature sounds as techniques to focus the mind, harmonize mind and body, and allow students to experience the benefits of meditation first hand.

To encourage students to develop their own daily practice and to become proficient at teaching.

The Viraja Homa

A “Homa” is a fire ceremony. The Viraja Homa is a meditative practice where there is no external “fire”, but instead the Yogi takes a meditative journey of transformation and reconstruction. It promotes good health and positive change, as well as preparing the Yogi for some of the deeper processes of meditation and raising Kundalini. There are more simple and more involved variations that are possible and each will be introduced so that the student has options for their own practice and for teaching this practice to different levels of students. The most complete variation will synthesize the concepts and practices that have been introduced in the study of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, and the introduction to Svara.

Gheranda Samhita

Gheranda Samhita is a slightly later text that is another famous treatise on Hatha Yoga. We will focus on the Dhyana Chapter of this text, which has a particularly elegant breakdown of the range of different types of meditation that we can employ in our practice. This breakdown is especially useful for the teacher, who may want to use variations on these practices as guided meditations in classes that they teach.

Understand Gheranda’s divisions of the different types of Dhyana, or meditation and be able to apply these concepts to meditations the student can utilize in a Yoga class.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is one of the most famous texts on the practice of Hatha Yoga. It presents the modern student with many insights into the more timeless aspects of the practice of Hatha Yoga. First, we will read the basic advice that the text presents for those who wish to undertake a Hatha Yoga practice, including the qualities of the Yogi which lead to success in practice. We will then explore the Mudras, practices which work with both mind and body to unlock our inner energy and potential. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika also has an excellent section on meditations on the Nada, or inner sound, which will be reviewed and practiced.

Learning Objective

Understand Svatmarama’s advice for those undertaking Yoga practice, learn the theory and practice of the Hatha Yoga “Mudras”, and the practice of “Nada” or the inner sound.

Using Mudras

Students will be taught mudras outlined in the Bihar School curriculum (Hasta, Mana, Kaya, and Bandha Mudras) and those taught by Yogi Bhajan within Kundalini kriyas, pranayamas and meditations (Pranam, Buddha, Shuni, and Ravi Mudras; Bear Grip and Venus Lock). We will experience the practical and subtle effects of specific mudras upon the various states of awareness of consciousness.

The Fine Art of Intelligent Sequencing

Understand the Creation of "Mini-Waves Within a Wave" Approach to Sequencing. Understand Rhythms, Pulsations, Progressions and Transitions for Related Asanas and Asana Families. Understand Various Themes or Sequencing Maps in Development of A Cohesive Flow Sequence Structure for the Yoga Class. Compare Sequencing Approaches of Shiva Rea and Erich Shiffmann. Samkhya Philosophy

Samkhya philosophy is one of the metaphysical backdrops of the practice of Yoga. The basic premises of this philosophy will be introduced as well as the cosmological principles that are enumerated in it. Then we will delve into how these principles fit into a Yoga practice and how they have been understood and presented in the Yoga Sutras themselves.

Ayurveda for the Yoga Practitioner

This will be an introduction to the theories and practices of Ayurveda. Beginning with the fundamental concepts of Ayurveda, such as Doshas and Prakriti. It will move on to how we can use this knowledge to live our lives with more balance and insight into our own health. Daily practices for maintaining health and balance will be explained in detail. Ayurvedic Nutrition will also be discussed, how to use food as medicine to address individual concerns as well as general Ayurvedic tips for crafting healthy and delicious meals. Emphasis will be placed on how this knowledge and these practices can supplement and support the practice of Yoga.

Understand basic concepts of Ayurveda and be able to put them into practice in their own lives as well as their Yoga classes.

Introduction to Jyotish (Vedic Astrology)

Jyotisha, or the Jyotir Vidya, is the Science of Light. More specifically, it demonstrates our interconnectedness within a holistic-cosmic paradigm where the aphorism “As of Above, So Below” is it’s consummate summation. Ancient Yogis studied the night’s sky in such depth and breadth that they intuited the qualities of the planets and luminaries and how they affect our individual karmic patterns which in turn produce calculable probabilities. Over millennia a plethora of data has been analyzed, codified, quantified and qualified allowing the Jyotishi, one who is possessed by the Jyotir Vidya, to use the individual’s birth chart to map potentialities to assist the individual on making her or his life’s journey that much more efficient, effective and fulfilling. This classic system of divination emphasizes that at times it’s better to sit and wait or at other moments to strike out quickly, seizing or avoiding certain currents of supportive or obstructing energies in order to make the best use of one’s time/energy during this lifetime and to be as successful as possible with whatever endeavor one sets out to achieve.

In this introduction to Jyotish, our YTT students will learn the basics of Jyotish by using their own birth charts as study material and learn how to apply this information to assist themselves and their students on their life’s journey.


Vaastu Vidya is India’s classical Science of Form and Space, or spatial orientation. Through understanding the energies of the four cardinal and four primary inter-cardinal directions, the five MahaBhutas (Great Elements) and the nine Grahas (the Planets), one can arrange any delineated structure to optimize the flow of Prana, or life force, within said structure. Vaastu’s utilization will breathe life into space to get the most positive benefits out of any physical construct.

Learning Objective

Students will use their own home, office, or yoga studio as the template for learning about and applying this classic Indian Shastra to increase their spatial awareness resulting in better harmony and efficiency in one’s life and surroundings. Vaastu is a great complimentary science to Jyotisha and Ayurveda.


Understanding of Classical Sanskrit for a dedicated practitioner of Yoga is like a doctor of medicine studying Latin. Familiarity with this ancient language of the sages will enhance ones relationship with the wisdom held in classical texts, the significance of asana names and the deeper meaning of mantra.

Learning Objective

This class will review the basics of Sanskrit pronunciation. The practical concerns of pronouncing pose names, terms, and chants will be addressed as well as the deeper esoteric elegance and power of the Sanskrit language. Key vocabulary for Yoga practitioners and teachers will be presented and analyzed, so that the students will understand the mythical significance of these terms. Students will learn to properly recite some of the basic and widely used chants of Yoga.

Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara and the Cittavrittis

The role of manas and its functions in ruling and organizing the senses will be presented, the role of Citta and the samskaras relationship to Citta will be placed in the context of Manas and Buddhi. The distinction between that which is knowing and willing and that which is subliminal or Samskara will be demonstrated. The 5 categories of Cittavrittis will be presented both from the Samkhya and the Yoga Sutras. The source of the mind, Ahamkara will be presented, and its attributes, functions and relationships to the Gunas will be outlined. The complete matrix of Inner Faculties will be presented in reference to their categorization as either Sattva, Raja or Tamas Guna. Yogasutras and other source references will be used to demonstrate the practical application of these Tattvas to the goal of Yoga, and to the tools used by Yoga to achieve the goal.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to name the constituent components of the Cittavrittis, and place them in correct relationship with Manas, Buddhi, and Ahamkara, and turn be able to identify appropriate technique and tools from the Yoga Sutras, Sivasvarodaya, and other classic materials to ensure optimal development of Manas and Ahamkara in the pursuit of Yoga. Anticipated techniques include pranayama, asana, tratak, and various meditation forms, including use of mantra, yantra, and general tantra. Students will understand the distribution of the external and internal faculties amongst the three gunas, and be able to apply these to assessment of both individual students (capacity, barriers, and potential) and to their own predominant strengths and weaknesses as teachers.

Introduction to Svara Yoga

Svara Yoga is the Yoga of the breath or, more specifically, the Yoga of attending to how the breath flows in the nostrils. By noticing differences in these flows, we can learn to attune ourselves to our physiology and we can also learn how to use our Yoga practice to create shifts in these breath patterns.

Learning Objective

Understand the basic concepts of Svara Yoga and its application to the many limbs of Yoga.

Yogic Diet and Healthy Eating Practices

Students will gain true understanding of nourishment, ahimsa, food energetics and the importance of mindful eating from the perspectives of Yoga, western nutrition science, Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Our lunches and dinners will be an experience in eating as an art form and as a spiritual practice.

I was taught in a Buddhist meditation program that if one can control their mouth, they can control their mind. This topic is a method for students to understand, experience and feel how food effects them on the levels of body, mind and spirit.


The concluding instructional block will use student led projects to plan teaching content, teaching environments and teaching style based on analysis of their own characteristics as analyzed through the lens of Ayurveda and Hasta Samudrika, and their own Janma Kundali. This will be applied to an hour long class that each student will teach which incorporates advanced topics covered like Ayurveda, Jytoisha and Vaastu. Class time will be used to prepare this project and students will break into pairs and small groups to practice teaching advanced concepts related to asana, pranayama, mudra, bandhas and sequencing will receive feedback on their delivery.

Learning Objective

Students will incorporate new found knowledge and integrate all topics covered in the training into their teachings.

Posture Clinic & Practice Teaching- students will be teaching Asana, Pranayama and Mantra chanting with partners and in groups, openly giving & receiving feedback.

Each student must create & teach a 2 hour workshop to be critiqued by instructors and peers.

Below is a sample schedule that will give you a great idea of what your weeks will look like while immersed in your training.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane
Please book your flight to arrive at Tambor Airport (TMU).

It is very easy to get to The Sanctuary at Two Rivers - Liz Lindh with a 25-minute flight from San Jose International Airport (SJC) to Tambor Airport (TMU) where a taxi will drive you through the famous Nicoya Peninsula Blue Zone to the sanctuary's yoga retreat Costa Rica and yoga teacher training certification program center. All guests must arrive at the sanctuary no later than 4 p.m. on arrival day. Please schedule your travel accordingly.

San Jose International Airport (SJC) is the most convenient airport to the sanctuary. Frequent international flights are available at this modern airport. For your travel, please plan at least two hours between local air and international travel. Please also note that there is a departure tax of approximately 28 USD at San Jose International Airport (SJC) when you leave Costa Rica.

Two local airlines offer scheduled flights and charter services to Tambor Airport (TMU). The flight time is 25 minutes. Please check for flights on either Sansa Airlines which is a five minutes' walk from the exit of the international airport or Nature Air which now departs from inside the international airport terminal but you must clear immigration and customs first then re-enter the building upstairs and check-in at their counter. Please allow at least one and a half hours from your international arrival time in order to clear immigration and customs and to check-in for the domestic flight.

Arrival by shuttle
You can book your own shuttle through Montezuma Expeditions or Tropical Tours for approximately 50 USD. Shuttles leave San Jose early every morning and will bring you directly to the sanctuary. This trip takes about a six hours’ trip.
